US 12/14/18/151 at Madison.

Most of US 14 in Wisconsin is somewhat secondary in character, because through traffic between La Crosse and Madison is more likely to be on Interstate 90, which runs a little more easterly. US 14 is therefore largely a two-lane road, except for the part around Madison, which is a freeway. The route passes through Janesville and intersects I-39, I-43, and I-90 in quick succession. US 14 in Illinois then continues to Chicago.

The Madison passage is also called the Beltline and is a complex road numbering of the US 12, US 14 US 18 and US 151. On July 13, 2022, a rush-hour lane on this ring road was inaugurated.

US 151 north of Madison.

US 151 follows a somewhat diagonal route through Wisconsin. The western part is a divided highway with some freeway – like bypasses around several towns between Dubuque and Madison. US 151 is the only US Highway that intersects all other US Highways that pass through Madison, plus the three Interstate Highways I-39, I-90, and I-94. From Madison to Columbus, US 151 is a continuous freeway of over 50 kilometers in length, then US 151 is a divided highway with grade separated bypasses to Fond du Lac. To the east, US 151 is more secondary in character and largely a two-lane road. US 151 ends at Interstate 43 in Manitowoc.

History

US 151 was created in 1926 and at the time only ran from Madison to Fond du Lac. The route was extended east to Manitowoc in 1934 and west to Iowa in 1938, creating the current route through Wisconsin. Between 1980 and 1990 the route between Dubuque and Madison was upgraded to a divided highway with partly freeway characteristics. In 1982, the Dubuque-Wisconsin Bridge opened over the Mississippi River. In 1995, the highway around Verona, the last project of this, opened. In 2018-2019, a number of intersections in southwest Madison were made grade separated.
