It is bordered by Nebraska to the north, Missouri to the east, Oklahoma to the south, and Colorado to the west. Kansas is named after the Kansas River, which flows through it. Its capital is Topeka and its largest city is Wichita, with its most populated county being Johnson County. Kansas is home to several major universities, including Kansas State University in Manhattan and Wichita State University in Wichita. The economy of Kansas relies heavily on agriculture and manufacturing; however, it also has an important service sector that includes health care, finance, technology, education and tourism. In addition to these industries, Kansas also has a strong energy industry with oil production from shale formations in western Kansas as well as wind power from turbines located across much of the state’s rural areas. The weather in Kansas varies greatly depending on the season. In the winter months, temperatures range from cold and snowy to mild and wet. During the spring, temperatures are usually mild with occasional rain showers. Summer brings hot and humid conditions with frequent thunderstorms.
