History

In the early 1970s, the highway was extended north to State Route 104, and was extended to Lake Ontario State Parkway in the early 1980s. The highway was originally planned as I-390, but in 1980 it was decided not to extend I-390 further north than I-490, so the northernmost portion was numbered State Route 390.
Between 2018 and 2021, the interchange between I-390, SR-390 and I-490 was reconstructed. A flyover has been installed for through traffic from I-390 to SR-390 so that weaving movements with traffic to the exit to SR-31 are avoided. The flyover opened to traffic on September 17, 2021.
