Missoula

Missoula is the second largest city in the US state of Montana and the county seat of Missoula County. Currently, around 57,000 inhabitants live here, but the entire metropolitan statistical area has over 95,000 inhabitants. Missoula is often nicknamed the “Garden City” due to its abundance of greenery.

The first inhabitants of the present-day Missoula area were the Salish Indians. The name of the city also comes from their language. The word “nmesuletk” meant the name for the Clark Fork river that flows through here. The local Indians first met white settlers in 1805, when the Lewis and Clark expedition passed through the valley. However, no permanent settlement was found here until 1860. Then CP Higgins and Francis Worden opened a trading post here called Hellgate Village. It stood near the Blackfoot River, not far from the eastern edge of the valley. In 1862, the first post office already existed here. The city received its name on May 14, 1866.

In 1883, the railroad was introduced, making Missoula a major trading center and distributor of products. The surroundings of the city were used for agriculture, especially grain cultivation. Missoula is home to the University of Montana and the birthplace of Jeanette Rankin, the first woman elected to the US Congress. The University of Montana was founded in September 1895 and is still the public university of western Montana.

The vicinity of Missoula is very attractive for tourists, as the city is located in the so-called Golden Triangle area, which is popular for all outdoor activities, including hunting, skiing and camping. Rattlesnake Wilderness and Rattlesnake National Recreation Area are nearby.
