Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park
In 1896, numerous gold deposits were discovered on the Klondike River, which flows through the Alaskan Yukon Territory. Thus began one of the biggest gold rushes of the time, which is now called the Klondike Gold Rush. The Klondike area then experienced a huge influx of gold diggers and people who wanted to get rich as quickly as possible. An incredible 100,000 adventurers came here in two years. Gold was discovered here many years earlier by gold digger George Carmack and his Indian assistants Tagish Charlie and Jim Skookum as they searched where the Bonanza Stream flows into the Klondike River. However, the real gold rush did not break out until the 1990s.
Although the gold-bearing area was located in Canada, access to the river was possible only from Alaska. The nearby city of Seattle, located in the northwestern United States, thus became an entry blow to Alaska. At the same time, this led to its rapid development, which continues to this day. A kind of starting point for the miners was his historic Seattle’s Pioneer Square, which is now lined with red brick houses. Most of the original buildings were destroyed in a major fire in 1889. If you go underground on the Underground Tour, you’ll find out what the harbor looked like more than a hundred years ago. At Occidental Park is the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, where you can learn about the city’s history and the gold-mining mania of the late 19th century.
Immigrants and gold diggers subsequently established the cult settlement of Dawson City in the Klondike area. It also attracted the writer Jack London, who lived here for several years. The gold diggers arrived in Alaska by boat, mostly landing at Skagway Harbor, where the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park is located today. The park was founded in 1976 and covers an area of 5342 hectares. Then they had to cross high mountain ridges on the Canadian-American border, which was quite physically demanding.
This process could be managed more quickly over the Chillkoot ridge, which was much more dangerous. Even in the summer months, the snow made it difficult here. Another option was to cross the White Pass, where it was possible to use the help of mules or horses that carried supplies. The Canadian government has issued an order that every gold digger must be equipped with supplies for the whole year. The railway later ran through the White Pass.
Today, the route through Chillkoot is a popular hiking trail, which is designed for true adventurers. As you walk along the Chillkoot’s trail, you will see places where thousands of gold diggers came in the 19th century in search of wealth and happiness. Those interested can take the historic narrow-gauge railway across the White Pass to the town of Skagway. The Chillkoot´s Trail and White Pass Trail end in the Canadian village of Bennet, from where you can sail along the Yukon River to Dawson City. A cruise lasting 16-18 days is an absolutely unforgettable experience, all the while you are surrounded by untouched Alaskan nature. Today, Klondike Gold Rush Park is guarded by local rangers.
Also interesting is the town of Whitehorse, which is surrounded by high hills and beautiful wilderness. The great idea of the secret is to rent a bike and go on an adventure.
